The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has debunked reports that travellers intercepted in Kogi State on Wednesday were foreigners who were on their way to Ekiti State to participate in the July 14 Governorship election.
The NIS Public Relations Officer, Sunday James in a statement in Abuja said the travellers were actually Nigerians who were travelling to Lagos State for their businesses.
The statement reads in part: "The Comptroller General of Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede's attention is drawn to a sensational report by some online media that about 200 foreigners were intercepted by our officers in Kogi State on their way to Ekiti
"This is untrue as the Comptroller of Immigration, Kogi State Command in whose jurisdiction the travellers were intercepted, confirmed with records that they were all Nigerians and no single Nigerien was found among the people apprehended. "
James said the command intercepted the travellers in the course if its routine assignment, adding that they were profiled to ascertain their true nationality.
"Contrary to the report going round, they are all Nigerian citizens travelling to Lagos for their legitimate businesses," he insisted.
Daily Trust gathered that those intercepted were actually 167 not the 200 being reported.
The breakdown of the figures show that 79 of them were from Kano, 26 from Jigawa while 18 were from Zamfara State.
21 came from Borno, 20 from Katsina, 2 from Bauchi and only one from Benue State.
